Smithfield, NC

Those looking for a small town feel with outdoor activities galore and easy travel access may want to look to Smithfield. The town is filled lakes, rivers, and lush greenery. The Neuse River runs right along the city center, separating the downtown area from what is known as West Smithfield by the locals. Smithfield was the hometown of famous American actress and singer, Ava Gardner, popular especially throughout the 1940s. The town now has the Ava Gardner Museum, where visitors can view artifacts from her life and that seemingly magical time period for music and the arts. Smithfield is also home to the annual Ham and Yam Festival, as well as the Buffalo Creek Greenway where residents can come together for some great country cooking and nature activities.
